How to Clean Your Bong, Pipe, or Vaporizer: A Quick Maintenance Guide

A plain-English guide to how to clean bong pipe: what adults 21+ should know, how to think about it, and where to go for the next level of detail.

The Short Answer

Regular cleaning of cannabis consumption equipment improves taste, preserves hardware, and reduces the accumulation of tar and resin. For adults 21 and older, a quick cleaning routine takes minutes and significantly extends the life of glassware, pipes, and vaporizers.

Glass Bongs and Pipes

Materials: Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher), coarse salt (kosher or sea salt), warm water.

Method:

  1. Drain any water.
  2. Pour alcohol into the piece.
  3. Add a generous pinch of salt, it acts as an abrasive.
  4. Seal openings with thumb or silicone caps.
  5. Shake for 60 seconds. Vigorously.
  6. Let sit 5-10 minutes.
  7. Rinse with warm water until alcohol smell is gone.
  8. Air dry.

For heavy buildup, let the piece soak in alcohol for several hours before shaking.

Frequency: After every session for taste-critical users; weekly for casual use.

Vaporizer (Flower)

Dry herb vaporizers need different cleaning than combustion pieces:

  • Chamber. Small brush after each session to remove particulate.
  • Mouthpiece. Remove if possible; wipe with alcohol-dampened cloth or soak separately.
  • Screens. Replace regularly or clean with alcohol.
  • Avoid soaking electronics. Battery units and non-removable parts should never be submerged.

Read your device's cleaning guide before using alcohol; some modern vaporizers have plastic parts that alcohol damages.

Vape Cartridges and Pens

These are generally single-use and not cleaned. When the cartridge is empty:

  • Recycle the cartridge if your area has a cannabis-recycling program.
  • The battery can be cleaned externally with an alcohol-dampened cloth.
  • Never attempt to refill a disposable cartridge.

Dab Rigs

Similar to bongs, with additional care for the nail/banger:

  • Banger or nail. Wipe while warm with a cotton swab after each session ("Q-tip after each dab"). This keeps buildup to a minimum.
  • For heavy buildup. Heat the banger until any remaining concentrate burns off; wipe clean while warm.
  • The rig itself. Alcohol/salt method, like a bong.

Grinders

  • Every few weeks. Disassemble and tap out kief.
  • Deep clean. Freeze the grinder, tap kief out, then wash with alcohol (metal grinders only, never alcohol on plastic grinders).
  • Kief collected during cleaning can be saved and used, it's just highly refined cannabis.

Ashtrays

Simple: empty often; occasional alcohol wipe.

What Not to Do

  • No bleach on cannabis equipment. Residue matters; bleach is not food-safe.
  • No soap alone. Doesn't cut resin efficiently.
  • No metal wire brushes on glass. Scratches.
  • No alcohol on silicone if your device has silicone parts, it breaks down the material.

Why Cleaning Matters

  • Taste. Clean glass tastes better than resin-coated glass.
  • Equipment lifespan. Extended use without damage.
  • Health. While the research is limited, combusting long-term resin accumulation is likely not better than combusting fresh flower.
