Hamptons State Beach Cannabis Law, the Reality
Most of the Hamptons beaches people name first are either state-owned or state-regulated. Here's what that means for cannabis, plainly.

Every summer, the same myth makes the rounds, that because New York legalized cannabis, the beach is fair game. It is not. Almost every beach the Hamptons are famous for falls into a category where consumption is not permitted, and the enforcement is real enough to end a weekend.
The Rule, Verbatim
New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. That sentence does the work, and it is the one worth memorizing before the season starts. Adults 21+ can possess cannabis legally, and that is not the same as being permitted to consume it wherever they stand.
Cooper's Beach, Main Beach, Ditch Plains
Cooper's Beach in Southampton, Main Beach in East Hampton, and Ditch Plains in Montauk are the three most-named beaches on the South Fork, and all three are regulated such that consumption is not permitted on the sand, in the parking lot, or on the access paths. Cooper's Beach is village-managed on state-regulated land. Main Beach is village-managed with state-land framework overlays. Ditch Plains is a Town of East Hampton beach with public-space rules. The result is the same, no consumption.
What's Allowed
A private rental deck that happens to have an ocean view is a different story. Consumption on private property, with the property owner's permission, adults 21+ only, is the compliant version. Some consumers describe the sunset-on-a-private-deck rhythm as more pleasant than any on-beach move would have been, which tracks. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov for any retail purchase, and keep product in a sealed exit bag in transit.
Enforcement, Plainly
Hamptons beach enforcement in season is staffed, not theoretical. A pre-roll on the sand draws a ticket, sometimes more. The fines are higher than most people expect, and the interaction ruins the afternoon. This is not a risk-reward calculation, the reward is zero, the risk is the rest of the day.
