The most common Hamptons cannabis question is not about strains. It is about geography: where the licensed stores are, whether they deliver to the house, and what happens between buying something in Southampton and getting it back to a rental in Montauk. The answers are simpler than the East End makes them look, with one wrinkle visitors tend to miss.
Where the licensed stores are
State-licensed retail on the South Fork clusters along one road. County Road 39, the bypass that carries most eastbound traffic around Southampton village, has most of it, and Montauk Highway in Water Mill has the rest. As of 2026:
- Charlie Fox, 471 County Road 39, Southampton. Walk-in, pickup and delivery, open daily 10 AM to 9 PM, with delivery across Southampton, East Hampton, Westhampton and Montauk.
- The Hamptons Collective, 257 County Road 39A, Southampton. Opened in May 2026.
- Hampton Premium Green, 978 Montauk Highway, Water Mill. In-store and delivery, open until 8 PM most days.
- Brown Budda New York, 1533 County Road 39, Southampton. Delivery and curbside pickup only, no walk-in storefront.
Further west, Riverhead has two of the larger stores on the Island: Strain Stars on Old Country Road, which opened in November 2024 at 14,000 square feet, and Beleaf in Calverton, which followed in December 2024. Both sit near the end of the Long Island Expressway, which makes them a Friday-arrival stop for anyone driving out.
Inside East Hampton, Amagansett and Montauk, the storefront map is thin. Plan to buy on the way east or order delivery.
The dispensary directory carries current listings, hours and the license status we track.
The wrinkle: the shops on Montauk Highway near Shinnecock
Drive past the Shinnecock Hills on Montauk Highway and a row of cannabis shops appears on Shinnecock Nation territory. The first of them opened in 2023, before any state-licensed store on the East End. These businesses operate under the Nation's own authority rather than a New York State license, which means they do not carry the OCM verification code.
That is a jurisdictional distinction, not a quality judgment. It does mean the state's verification tool covers the licensed stores listed above and not the tribal ones. This site covers state-licensed retail.
How to check a store is licensed
Every licensed adult-use dispensary in New York displays a verification QR code. Scan it at the door and confirm the result before buying. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov. A storefront that looks official without that code is not one.
What to bring
- A valid government photo ID showing 21+. No ID, no sale, regardless of how obviously over 21 anyone looks.
- A payment plan. Accepted payment varies by store. Check before driving and carry cash as a fallback.
- A rough idea of what you want. Staff on a summer Saturday are busy. In October they have time to talk.
How much you can carry
Adults 21+ in New York can possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis, a category that covers edibles and oils. Legal sharing between adults 21+, with no payment involved, is allowed within those limits.
Delivery to the house
For a share house or a rental without a second car, delivery is the cleaner option. Licensed delivery comes with an ID check at the door, so the adult 21+ who placed the order should be the one answering it. Expect a delivery window rather than an exact time, and expect longer windows on Friday evenings in season.
Getting it home: car, train, Jitney
By car. Consuming cannabis in a motor vehicle is prohibited in New York, for drivers and passengers alike. Keep purchases sealed and out of reach, ideally in the trunk. Never drive after consuming. The eastbound crawl on Route 27 is not the place to discover how long an edible takes.
By train. Smoking and vaping are banned on LIRR trains, inside stations, and on outdoor platforms and boarding areas. Sealed purchases in a bag are not the issue. Using anything on the platform is.
Leaving New York. Cannabis bought in New York stays in New York. Carrying it across a state line, onto a flight, or onto the ferry to Connecticut moves it into federal territory, where it remains illegal.
Where you can and cannot consume
New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces, and that covers the state parks and the state-run beaches at the end of the island. Consumption is also prohibited at private businesses such as restaurant patios, and on federal property. Village and town rules can be stricter than state law, and the East End villages are not known for leniency.
The rental house is the realistic option, and only if the lease allows it. Plenty of East End rental agreements ban smoking indoors and out, and a cleaning fee tends to follow a violation.
The short version
- Adults 21+ only, with valid photo ID.
- Buy from a state-licensed store and scan the OCM code.
- County Road 39 and Water Mill for storefronts, delivery for everywhere else.
- Sealed and in the trunk while driving; nothing on the train platform.
- Start low, go slow with edibles, especially on the first night of a weekend.
What the East End is doing this season, from the off-season markets to the winter calendar, lives on the events hub.
