Weed Dispensary in Shelter Island Heights? There Isn't One. Here Is the Ferry Math

Shelter Island opted out of dispensaries in 2021, so there is no licensed store anywhere on the island. The nearest are one ferry ride away in either direction, in Water Mill, Southampton, Riverhead and Calverton.

Is there a weed dispensary in Shelter Island Heights? No, and there is not one anywhere else on Shelter Island either. The Town Board voted unanimously in 2021 to opt out of retail dispensaries and on-site consumption, and as of 2026 the state's verification list shows no licensed storefront on the island. For adults 21+ staying in the Heights, Dering Harbor or anywhere else on the island, the nearest licensed stores are one ferry ride away in either direction. Here is how each route works, and the rules that ride along.

Why the island has no store

New York's 2021 cannabis law let each town decide whether to host dispensaries. Shelter Island adopted Local Law 7 of 2021 in May of that year, opting out of both retail dispensaries and on-site consumption sites, with the stated aim of leaving any future change to residents. The village of Dering Harbor, on the island's north shore, opted out as well. The Office of Cannabis Management's dispensary verification list, checked as of 2026, has no Shelter Island address.

The opt-out covers storefronts and lounges only. Possession is legal on the island for adults 21+, up to 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrate, exactly as it is in Southampton or Greenport.

Two ferries, two directions

Shelter Island is reachable only by water, and the two ferry companies decide which store is closer.

South: the South Ferry to North Haven

The South Ferry runs between the south end of the island and North Haven year-round, every 10 to 15 minutes in the company's own description. From the North Haven landing the road runs through Sag Harbor and down to Montauk Highway, and the closest licensed store that way is Hampton Premium Green, 978 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. Three more sit a few miles further west on County Road 39 in Southampton: The Hamptons Collective at 257 County Road 39A, Charlie Fox at 471 County Road 39 and Brown Budda New York at 1533 County Road 39.

North: the North Ferry to Greenport

The North Ferry leaves from Shelter Island Heights for Greenport. The North Fork side has no licensed storefront in Greenport or Southold, both of which opted out in 2021. The nearest stores on that side are in the Town of Riverhead: Strain Stars at 1871 Old Country Road in Riverhead and Beleaf at 4462 Middle Country Road in Calverton.

For most island addresses the South Ferry and Water Mill make the shorter trip. For anyone already driving out the North Fork from the expressway, Riverhead is on the way. Ferry schedules shift by season, and the companies post current times on their own sites; check before planning around a late boat.

Delivery to the island

Licensed stores can deliver to private residences in towns that opted out of storefronts. Whether a given store's service area crosses the water to Shelter Island is the store's call, and none of the East End stores spells it out on its home page. The reliable test is to enter the island address at checkout on the store's delivery page. Delivery orders are prepaid, and the courier checks a 21+ photo ID at the door.

The dispensary directory carries current hours and delivery details for each licensed store on both forks.

Before you go

  • ID. Adults 21+ only, with a valid government-issued photo ID. Out-of-state licenses and passports work.
  • Verify. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov, posted at every licensed dispensary.
  • Limits. Up to 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrated cannabis.
  • Edibles. Start low, go slow. A low-milligram first serving and a long wait; state guidance notes edibles can take up to four hours to register.

The rules on the boat and the island

  • In the car. Using cannabis in a motor vehicle is illegal in New York, for drivers and passengers, moving or parked. That includes the car sitting in the ferry line and the car on the deck. Purchases ride sealed, ideally in the trunk.
  • On the water. Both ferries are private companies with their own rules aboard. Keep purchases closed for the ride.
  • On the island. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. On Shelter Island that takes in the town beaches, the roads and the town landings.
  • At Mashomack. The Nature Conservancy's Mashomack Preserve covers more than 2,350 acres of the island's southeast side and sets its own rules: no pets, trails open dawn to dusk, and the preserve is closed for all of January 2027. Visitors from the North Ferry follow Route 114 south about three miles to the entrance sign.
  • Leaving New York. It is illegal to cross state lines with cannabis.

Inns and rentals set their own terms, and many ban smoking on the property. Read the policy before booking.

Shelter Island in winter

The island empties out after the season and runs on its year-round population, which makes it one of the quietest places on the East End from December to March. Mashomack's trails and its 11 miles of shoreline reopen after the January closure. The Heights, on the hill above the North Ferry landing, reads as a village rather than a ferry queue once the summer traffic has gone, and the bay sunsets are the same as they are in July, with fewer people watching. Seasonal events across the East End, including the winter seal walks on the South Fork, are on the events hub, and the Shelter Island page covers the island itself.

The short version

There is no dispensary in Shelter Island Heights or anywhere on Shelter Island, because the town opted out in 2021. Take the South Ferry to North Haven for Hampton Premium Green in Water Mill and the three County Road 39 stores in Southampton, or the North Ferry to Greenport and drive to Riverhead or Calverton. Bring ID, scan the OCM code, keep it sealed in the car and on the boat, and keep it off the beaches.
